It is highly unlikely Doug McConnell would have introduced himself as a "lawyer" to Dr. Preston. The word isn't used much in the UK, and instead he would call himself a "solicitor." There is a chance he used the word because Preston is American, yet even in that case "attorney" would be more likely, and given that Preston has been working in London McConnell probably would guess he knows what a solicitor is.
