To keep out visitors, Bilbo posts a sign on his gate -- "no admittance except on party business". Above both "a"s in "admittance" are a triangle of dots, sort of a middle-earth version of an umlaut. In "The Hobbit", Frodo is seen nailing this sign to Bilbo's gate before he runs off to meet Gandalf -- the triangles of dots don't appear on the sign -- and the nails look different in the two movies.
