When Harry asks Percy who the teacher next to Quirrell is, Percy replies that it is Prof. Snape, and that he's the Potions Master. He adds that he has coveted Quirrell's Post as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for years. This implies that Quirrell has been in that post for years.
It's later revealed that no teacher has held that post for more than one year, because Tom Riddle cursed it when he didn't receive the post years before. The curse on the post is never actually mentioned in the films.
