When freeing Pippin and Merry from the roots of the tree that has engulfed them, one of the things Treebeard tells the tree is to go away and 'eat earth'. While trees do take some nutrients from the ground, this amount is negligible, the overwhelming mass of a tree comes from the carbon dioxide absorbed by the tree's leaves. It is a common misconception (that trees get a significant amount of, if not all, their mass from the earth), and being an Ent or Tree-herder, Treebeard should know this.
