The giant snakes raise clouds of dust and sand as though they were large tubes of meat being towed across the desert. Snakes don't move like this, for individual belly scales take it in turns to stand stationary, while the others ripple forwards clear of the ground. This can be clearly seen in the wildlife documentary Planet Earth II where racer snakes chase iguanas that kick up sand with their feet, but the snakes seem to just glide at speed since they never disturb the sandy surface.
