(at around 1h 45 mins) When Rhodey fell from the sky after being shot down, he had absolutely no power in his suit to help cushion his fall. Free-falling in an uncushioned, heavy, metal suit and hitting the ground unprotected should have killed him on impact. However, it is very likely that Stark has designed his suits, including War Machine, to have an emergency power source for powering an essential shock absorption system for just such circumstances in the event a problem developed with the arc reactors mid-flight.
