The original plan of Slytherin was to use the Basilisk to kill all Muggle-born students, but only them. However, if Harry, who is Pure-blood, can die from eye contact with the Basilisk, then Slytherin risked countless lives he wouldn't want to, as the Basilisk could kill anyone accidentally.
