In 1885, Doc finds out that he is to be murdered by Mad Dog Tannen over a matter of $80 within the next few days (he even tells Marty that he wishes he paid him off). As smart as the Doc is, why didn't he simply pay him the $80 or at least arrange for someone to pay Tannen on Doc's behalf? This would allow Doc & Marty more time to plan and carry out their return to 1985.
