Walter does not want to pick up the Dude because "it's Erev Shabbos." Erev Shabbos is the Sabbath Eve, that is, Friday. By the time it's dark on Friday, as it is in the scene, it is the Sabbath proper.There does seem to be some light outside the window, but the Dude did come back at night and when leaving the house almost immediately afterward it is also dark.
