In the reset where Cage decides to not approach Rita and undertake the mission on his own, Rita would ostensibly die on the beach in the manner portrayed in their first encounter. Thus Cage can't avoid involving Rita in defeating the Omega. However, he was most likely trying to figure out how to continue, before taking Rita with him.
