Before the Meeting with Gromyko Kennedy states that he does not want the Russians to know that they (the U S) know that there are missiles in Cuba then he asks Gromyko if he can confirm that there NO missile's in Cuba. That in itself would make Gromyko suspicious that the Americans do know.
