The Englishman's cane is left behind. In the chapter "The Mortal Remains" Thigpen the Englishman drops his cane to pick up the feet of the wrapped body because he needs to use both hands. Clarence the Irishman picks up the head with one hand and they enter the 'Hotel'. The other passengers disembark, the stagecoach leaves and the cane, part of the character's identity, is never retrieved as the movie ends.
