Early in the movie, we see John's puppy following him getting into the car (the Mustang), and taking the front seat next to the driver.
John then heads to a large open space, where he has the opportunity to drive hazardously with some real braking turns in it. Those are impossible to do with a dog (even a puppy) placed in the front seat without harming him bad, because he would smash himself in front of the seat.
Even if not placed in the front seat, it would still be very dangerous to drive like that with a puppy inside the car.
