The main characters make their escape in a boat on an underground river. Water only flows downwards - and there are a number of very obvious sizeable descents in their journey. And yet, when they reach the end, there's only a small flight of stairs up to the surface... What's more, shortly afterwards they look down on Ember from a very great height down a crevice.
