After the prison had closed down and Papillon was delivered to Devil's Island, a boat ramp area leading from the water to the upper part of the island is visible. Given this, why did Degas later tell Papillon that a boat could not be launched "from any part of the island," and furthermore, why did Papillon not use this low point to escape as when he had first arrived? Why did he go to all the trouble to guess the wave frequency and jump from the high cliff?
