Officer McClane finds the subway bomb in the first car (front) of the train, then proceeds to walk to the last car (back) of the train prior to detonation. We see the signal sent to detonate the bomb when the first wheels roll over the trigger. Simon's plan appears to be fairly precise, so it's reasonable that he would have planned the bomb to be in the first car when it exploded (i.e. at that location on the track). Since McClane had moved the bomb at least several hundred feet, the bomb is no longer in the planned location and could have spoiled the plan.
