Ballistic missiles do not work as depicted, The rocket section propels the warhead section out of the atmosphere which then detached and falls under the influence of gravity towards the target and, in most cases, multiple warheads (not a single bomb as depicted) detonate above the target not propelled by the rocket to the destination. It seems to be a common movie trope that 'ballistic' is used as a substitute for 'big'.
