At the moment she gets out of Craven's car, Melissa is immediately struck by a car traveling at very high speed. Assuming the driver was some distance away and waiting for her to get out, it would have been virtually impossible, with only a couple of seconds notice, to accelerate fast enough to get to that spot at precisely the right moment to hit her.
