(at around 1h 35 mins) When Major Mitchell is asked to shoot the Coke can from the alien aircraft, he has a bunch of papers in his hand. He continues to hold the papers until he actually aims at the can with a gun and then the papers are gone. He might have just dropped them on the floor but it seems more likely he would put them some place safe (e.g. table).
