The gun Ramon uses in the riverbank massacre bears no resemblance to any weapon available at the time (or since). The barrel replicates a volley gun with multiple slim barrels, but the two-handled grips and breech appear to be based on a much later Vickers/Maxim-type gun. The breech (which is empty) is designed to take a belt of ammunition which is fed through. The volley gun barrel would have had individual cartridges loaded into each of the 48 barrels, which would have been fired either individually using a hand crank or simultaneously via a firing lever. In the final shot as Ramon let's the barrel drop a tube is visible connected to the back of the gun and leading off screen. This is presumably the line operated by someone off screen to trigger the pyrotechnics in the barrels and/or blow smoke out of the barrels to simulate gunfire.
