The film is set in the summer of 1933 ending with the July 4th celebrations. When Rooster and Lily arrive at the orphanage as Annie's parents, Hannigan tells them to hurry up as she's listening to Helen Trent. The first episode of the radio soap opera The Romance Of Helen Trent wasn't aired until October 30th of that year.
