Davis says that the grizzly bear is the most fearsome terrestrial predator. This is not true. They are in fact only the third largest of all currently living terrestrial predators, after the Kodiak bear (which is a species of brown bear) and the polar bear, which is the largest of all bears. Grizzlies eat primarily plant-based diets, supplemented with occasional animals they kill or scavenge opportunistically, making them hardly fearsome by comparison with the polar bear, which eats almost exclusively an animal diet, with the occasional grazed vegetation. Since polar bears are both much larger than grizzlies and primarily predators, they are actually the most fearsome of all land predators.
