When Joe uses the electric prod, it has a wrist strap attached. Then he has his arm torn off when the big cat grabs the prod. Even in the unenlightened 1980's, no trained animal handler would ever have a tool tethered to their body. Anyone with any real experience with dangerous animals knows that to have any such tool attached to them would allow the animal to grab the item, and thus themselves.
