When Callahan is conducting his stakeout from the roof of a downtown building he is armed with a rifle chambered in.458 Winchester. This is an "express" type cartridge manufactured specifically for the hunting of thick-skinned, dangerous African game such as elephants. Like all cartridges of this class it fires a massive projectile, which, due to its weight, drops very quickly over short distances and is meant to be used at relatively close ranges. It is the LAST type of cartridge that any knowledgeable shooter would employ in a sniper role.
