Many doors with keycard locks have manual locks for the deadbolt in case of a power outage, meaning an ordinary metal key will work just fine. Since the door to the laboratory has a manual lock on the doorknob, there's no reason Sam couldn't pick it; a "separate code" wouldn't prevent the manual mechanism from working.
