If it was as easy as depicted for the elephants to dam the river and dig ditches to put out the wildfire, the running river would already have flooded the whole plain; however, we are obviously not shown all the work that the elephants did, otherwise it would've taken too much screen time. Moreover, the movie deliberately exaggerates the abilities of elephants, ascribing them almost supernatural powers. Bagheera even tells Mowgli that elephants have created the jungle and the rivers.
