When flying if radio contact is lost the pilots would fly to their last clearance point. If they were cleared to the airport destination that would be where they would fly to, if it was only an "intersection" in the sky that would be the point and they would circle until their "expect further clearance time". They would NOT make any unspecified turns or descents that Air Traffic Control doesn't know about for the simple fact that they (the pilots) don't know where the other planes are in relation to their planes. Therefore when asked what the pilots would be doing if he wasn't there holding a gun they should have replied we would be flying onto Washington D.C.
