At the end of the movie, there is the climactic battle between Ripley and the Alien Queen. Many viewers believe this was not necessary, as the Queen was occupied with laying eggs and only concerned with their protection (hence her silent order to the other aliens to back away from Ripley after demonstrating the flamethrower). She only became aggressive when Ripley started burning the eggs. Therefore Ripley should have just taken Newt, slipped away from the egg chamber and escaped, then proceeded with the plan to nuke the planet from orbit. However, as Ripley was starting to back away, one of the eggs near her opened, presumably with a facehugger ready to spring out after her. Ripley knew this was likely to happen with several of the eggs, so chose a preemptive strike rather than having several facehuggers chasing after her, especially while hindered with a small child.
