The film was based on a true incident, but the fate of the passengers of the S.S. St. Louis is not completely accurate. In the movie, two passengers are allowed to disembark in Cuba. In real life, 29 were allowed to. The epilogue states that more than 600 of the 937 passengers died during WWII or in concentration camps. Historians estimate that most of the passengers survived the war and camps, with about 200 killed.
