According to the Terminator, the obsolete T-800 model was selected because of John Connor's emotional attachment to it. This is hardly a good reason for the Resistance to send an obsolete terminator as they should've been perfectly capable of creating a modern terminator that looked like a T-800, or simply have a modern terminator imitate that look.
