The car is shot full of holes and this allows it to be cut in half on the elevator. The TV show MythBusters: Green Hornet Special tested this and proved that (1) no matter how many bullet holes were in the car it would not be cut in half, (2) the roof would crush down and not stay intact as it does in the film and (3) cars of that era were rear-wheel drive, not front wheel.
