Joe the Chauffeur had arranged a date with the maid using the Cord. At the last minute Carter takes the offered car to go on his own date. Before Joe and the maid can grab the sedan, the butler takes it and chases the cord convertible. Joe does not immediately grab the other car that is there and pursue. The butler loses the Cord in traffic, yet somehow, Joe (the murderer) who left later, finds carter, either at the park and tails him or in the woods, and kills him. Without any idea of where Carter was going or a plan for killing him that night.
