After the camp is liberated by the Allies, Larkin learns that his family was killed by a German air raid on Coventry in 1941. However, by 1941 the Luftwaffe's ability to bomb England was curtailed and there were only two raids on Coventry in 1941, both occurring in April. The Pacific War didn't start until December 1941 with the Singapore garrison surrendering in February 1942. Given than 10 months had gone by, Larkin most surely would already have known about the death of his family.
