The first MLB night game was played between the Cincinnati Reds and the Philadelphia Phillies in 1935. In 1939, when the movie takes place, night games were still a novelty. Therefore it is unlikely that the final game to decide the pennant would have been played at night. However Roy Hobbs' home run that set off a chain reaction of the lights in the stadium exploding did make it more dramatic. This could be why the film makers opted for the final game to be played at night.
