It is stated that the characters die off in the same order they would have died in the airplane explosion. Alex traces the death order by following the path of the leaking fuel toward the source of the explosion. However, the explosion would have gone in the opposite direction, away from the source of the explosion. As such the characters are dying in reverse order.
