Liquid mercury is very uncommon in nature although it does exist. Mercury occurs in deposits throughout the world mostly as cinnabar (mercuric sulfide). The liquid form of mercury is 13 times the density of water. Lead floats on mercury. When recovering the sarcophagus, there would be no need for weights to pull it up out of the mercury. The sarcophagus would have floated to the top on its own due to it not having sufficient density to sink. At the end of the film they are shown filling the sarcophagus with mercury to imprison the dried remains of Ahmanet. She would have needed to be physically attached to the bottom of the vessel due to buoyant forces.
