In the first scene, Scotty (James Stewart) and another cop are chasing someone across San Francisco rooftops. When Scotty tries to leap from one roof to another, he doesn't quite make it, but he grabs a gutter to keep from falling. His colleague, who reaches out to help him, plunges to his death. Scotty is, appropriately, terrified, but it is never shown how he gets down safely (unless this is one of the nightmares that seem to plague him).
