When Harold tells his mother he is getting married he gives her a double-sided photo, on one side a flower and on the other what appears to be a picture of a man with a beard.However, the photograph is indeed a picture of Maude. The 'beard' is just an unfortunate dark shadow below her nose. It was probably taken in strong mid-day sunlight.(This can be verified by taking a screen grab and enhancing it in any photo editing software).
