At the end of the previous movie, Wick had been pursued by a number of independent assassins attempting to claim the bounty that had been placed on Wick. This was done while he was still in good standing with the Continental and all of its affiliates, and nobody had any qualms about attempting to kill Wick.At the beginning of this movie, which begins immediately after the second leaves off, all of the independent assassins are obliged to wait until the official excommunicado order takes effect before attempting to kill Wick, despite having no necessity to do so beforehand.
