U-boats are shown operating within a dozen or so meters of each other. In reality they would never have got this close for numerous reasons: the risk of collision; the fact that such close proximity would baffle the hydrophones, making it difficult to detect enemy vessels; the greater probability of being detected by sonar-equipped Allied warships; the fact that they needed to be widespread in a 'wolfpack' to engage the greatest number of targets in a convoy.
