Crusaders came and went from the regions of battle, and though some may have been pledged to fight for a lord in exchange for some reward, there wasn't the same sense of "desertion" as there is now if they left. Many of the Crusades lasted years and lords and their knightly vassals took part when they could, sometimes leaving early to tend to their responsibilities back home, or after injuries. It is unlikely that anyone who came across Behman and Felson and recognized them as Crusaders would have thought anything was suspicious. It is also highly unlikely that they would be recognized as individuals and therefore need to cover their faces. Even if their leader who declared them deserters had wanted to punish them and put the word out to towns and villages that two deserters might pass through, limited communication through Europe and the Near East would make such a task mostly impossible, and there was no such thing as "wanted" posters with people's faces on them.
