Strip away the many red herrings in this film, and the plot hinges on a supposedly "perfect murder." The "perfect murder" has the heroine opening the door of a safe which triggers a 'rigged' pistol shot that the killer hopes would presumably be considered a suicide by the police. However, even though story takes places in 1940s crime detection had evolved to a point that authorities would look at the allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound and determine that the victim had no gun powder on her hands which is consistent with a death of this nature. The average suicide victim could never shoot herself or himself in this manner.
