The American Rifle of the 1770s required a very tightly patched roundball that could take a minute or more to ram down the barrel, with some men using wood mallets to pound the last few inches in, especially after repeated shots as the powder residue (or "coking"( built up. This would have made the ambush at the start of the film impossible.Moreover, neither the smoothbore (like those of the British Army) nor the American Rifle could be loaded from the prone position (as the boys were doing). The loading can only be done with the butt of the gun against the ground.
