The story opens in 1919, and both Raoul and Madame Giry are shown to be quite elderly. The rest of the story flashes back to 1870. If Raoul had been in his 20s in 1870, he could easily have been in his 70s in 1919. However, if Meg and Christine were in their late teens in 1870, Madame Giry would have been in her late 30s or early 40's at this time and therefore in her late 80s or early 90s in 1919. She is instead depicted as being the same age, if not younger and less infirm than Raoul in 1919.
