(at around 21 mins) When the spacecraft are approaching their first target cities they are enveloped in roiling clouds and yet a sharp shadow is shown proceeding across the ground. The enveloping clouds would cast a diffuse edged not a sharp shadow. Further, the flames seen in the clouds would emit light, which would partially negate the effect of the shadow, illuminating the ground to some degree.
