At the start of the battle, the bugler is ordered to "sound the charge." A man with a bugle places the instrument to his lips and the charge is heard. A bugle has no valves and is only capable of playing a fixed collection of notes. What is heard are the embellished notes that can only come from a modern trumpet that has valves.
