The shaft Chris, Laura, and Janet escape through after retrieving the parts to make the rod gun is actually a horizontal passage with the camera frame flipped to make it look like vertical shaft. You can tell this by the fact that as Chris climbing "down" the ladder she looks up at the others yet her hair is dangling forward toward the ladder and not down toward the bottom like it would if the shaft were truly vertical.
