Except as a plot device for a screenwriter to hold an element of dramatic tension till the end of a story, it would never make sense to not tell a patient of their tubercular illness. In the 1940s, total rest, usually in a sanatorium, was a major factor in recovering from the disease. Ignorance of the disease and therefore ignorance of the required rest for the patient would make no sense.
