After the wives toss Nux out of the War Rig, he gets up almost immediately and starts running towards the approaching war party. Sand may be soft when you walk on it, but if a body hits sand from a considerable height or while moving forwards at even a fast sprint, hitting the sand will be like hitting pavement, and it will cause blunt-force trauma. The shirtless Nux should have come away with - at a minimum - a severe case of road rash, and probably some broken bones.
