The farmhouse used for filming didn't have a proper basement or cellar (It had only a tiny dirt root cellar without an interior set of stairs.) so the basement of a small film production house was used. This is backed up by all of the wiring seen in the basement. There is far too much wiring both electrical and telephone for a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse. For example, there even appears to be an old multi-line telephone junction box installed on one of the rafters. This is hardly what would be expected in an old country house.
